About Hawken School

Hawken School is a private k-12 school with multiple campus locations in Cleveland, Ohio. With a mission to "prepare students to navigate a complex and dynamic world with self-confidence and determination, embrace challenges with disciplined analysis and creativity, and engage others with empathy and integrity." Seeking to cultivate an innovative problem-based curriculum, Hawken Brown contacted studioTECHNE to envision a learning design center.  

Our Design Approach

In order to better understand Hawken's pedagogy and expectations, we began our design process by engaging with administration, faculty, staff, and students. Our design approach envisioned teaching spaces as laboratories or studios that supported hands-on, individual, and group learning. To support these various instructional methods, each teaching space was surrounded by fabrication labs, media studios, and common areas - allowing the opportunity for dynamic learning experiences to emerge. Above all else, our approach to Hawken's learning design center prioritized spaces that allow students to actively participate in their educational experience through disciplined analysis and creative exploration.
