The Project
Colleges and universities often purchase buildings without yet knowing how they might be renovated to fit their needs, and that's where we come in. Case Western Reserve University's engineering department tasked us with transforming an existing warehouse into a collaborative learning environment to support a digital fabrication lab.
The Design Challenge
Together with the engineering department, we developed a multi-dimensional classroom space within the existing warehouse, ultimately creating a shift in organizational structure and teaching pedagogy. Understanding that student and faculty teams evolve and develop on a project-specific basis, it became clear that this learning environment would need to flexibly accommodate various meeting places, intense digital and media infrastructure, and the movement of materials and resources necessary to support project teams. The interior and exterior design respond to this complexity with a series of simple, autonomous components that combine and rearrange to support interaction and collective problem solving amongst team members.
